Understand SMC & Calculator
SMC is extra, tax‑free compensation for specific severe circumstances (loss of use, significant blindness, housebound, Aid & Attendance, etc.). It is separate from your VA “combined %” math. Below is a plain‑English guide and a helper calculator.
SMC Levels — quick map
| Level | Plain-English | Common qualifiers |
|---|---|---|
| K | Add‑on for specific losses (can stack). | Loss of use of one hand/foot, blindness one eye LP only, creative organ, total deafness both ears. |
| S | Housebound or 100% + separate 60%. | Actually housebound; or one disability 100% plus additional separate 60% combined. |
| L | Basic A&A or certain severe losses. | Regular Aid & Attendance; loss of use of both feet; bilateral vision 5/200 (or field equivalent). |
| L½ | Between L and M. | Loss of use of one hand and one foot; A&A plus additional severe loss. |
| M | Higher loss combos or stricter blindness. | Loss of use of both hands; more severe bilateral blindness criteria. |
| M½ | Between M and N. | Both legs preventing natural knee action plus another major loss, etc. |
| N | Very severe loss or near‑total blindness. | Anatomical loss both arms above elbow; blindness both eyes LP only. |
| N½ | Between N and O. | Severe combinations short of O. |
| O | Max “basic” level before R. | Multiple severe losses; A&A on top of very high SMC base. |
| R‑1 / R‑2 | Higher‑level A&A tiers when already at O/qualifying P. | R‑1: daily A&A; R‑2: daily skilled services. |
| T | Severe TBI requiring A&A. | TBI with continuous A&A need. |
VA pays the single highest SMC (S, L‑O, R/T), plus any payable Ks (within limits).
Quick tips
- SMC is about functional loss and need for help.
- Evidence wins: DBQs, PT/OT, vision fields, caregiver statements.
- Intermediate “half‑steps” and “P” steps make SMC scale with reality.
SMC Helper Calculator
We suggest a likely SMC level to explore. This is educational only (refer to 38 CFR 3.350/3.352).
Evidence that helps
- Loss of use: physician statements showing no effective function for everyday tasks.
- Vision: acuity and field tests meeting thresholds.
- A&A / Housebound: ADL assistance, supervision needs, frequency, safety issues.
